Jean de Dieu
Jean de Dieu is the headmaster of Rusuzumiro, another local primary school. He is the son in law of Papa Jacinth. I meet him for the first time at Rugerero school, where teachers are being trained to learn English. He is a very articulate, intelligent young man, able to express himself as clearly in English as in French. I ask him how he feels about changing the language of education from French to English. He expresses his concern, due to the fact that teachers in rural Rwanda hardly speak English at all, that it is going to make them even less qualified to teach than before. He is afraid that they might eventually lose their jobs... I try to reassure him and tell him that perhaps now they will really be motivated to do further training....
He has done quite a bit of training himself and juggles his duties as headmaster, his role as a husband and father of two with university studies in Kigali, at least 4 hours away. If all teachers in Rwanda and in the world had his drive and gentle energy, the world would be a better place...
