Is a shepperd who can read and write happier than an illiterate shepperd? Photo

This is not a rhetorical question. This very young shepherd leads a very simple life which he did not choose. He looks poor. He IS poor... economically poor, that is. His life is predictable and is mostly dictated by the needs of his goats and his needs for his goats to survive and look after his younger brothers and sisters, since he is an orphan. Starvation and spiralling down towards death via malnutrition is not an abstract concept for him. Going to school is a luxury he can’t afford. It could be fatal.
A headmaster tells me about a 13-year-old boy who, last year, came to his office to let him know he would not be returning to school the following day, as he had to look after his goats and feed his younger brothers and sisters. He will never learn about climate change. Would he be happier if he did?
